Anyone else like rock music?

I've grown up with this musical genre, and while I have listened to other genres such as IDM, Chiptune, and Pop, rock music dominates my musical tastes. Here's a few artists I would recommend

CAN
They're a great psychedelic rock band from Germany. I would recommend Ege Bamyasi first, or if you listen to songs, Moonshake, Vitamin C, and Paperhouse.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
These fellas are amazing at creating modern rock music. Start on I'm In Your Mind Fuzz and Nonagon Infinity. Their best songs include The Dripping Tap, Head On / Pill, Robot Stop, and Am I In Heaven?

Spoiler: Details
They've explored many musical genres, such as psychedelic pop, heavy thrash metal, doom metal, psychedelic rock, garage rock, krautrock, jazz-pop, jazz-fusion, progressive rock, jam rock, and spaghetti western. Willoughby's Beach and 12 Bar Bruise define the band's early sound. Both records were recorded on 4 iPhones and the albums are actually pretty good. Eyes Like The Sky is their spaghetti western album, and the album works as more of an audiobook rather than a traditional music album. Then they defined their modern sound in the record Float Along - Fill Your Lungs, starting with a 16 minute long song that is an amazing journey to go through. Oddments is their first album where different songs have various genres and is in the middle for consistency compared to the other two "miscellaneous" albums. One genre that this album could be generalized into is psychedelic, but there is some folk-y stuff in the album, specifically Vegemite and Crying. Vegemite is the band's most personal song, because Stu (the lead singer) actually likes vegemite a lot. This album isn't really a fan favorite, but it still remains to be a great album.

Then we get to their first album I would consider for a high ranking, I'm In Your Mind Fuzz. The first four songs transition into each other to craft one song, then the other songs play out, like how Float Along - Fill Your Lungs is structured. Their first masterpiece single was in 2013, Head On / Pill, and this album is their first masterpiece album. Am I In Heaven? has an acoustic section in the beginning, middle, and end of the song, while in between is the more heavy stuff. Speaking of acoustic sections, the band decided to craft a fully acoustic album in 2015. This album is Paper Mache Dream Balloon. This album may be one of their most underrated albums. The album goes with the trope of happy sounding music having dark lyrics. The entire album is about a serial killer with a facade that plays out as normalcy, and is mentioned to not be guilty for reason of insanity, which is what NGRI stands for. Quarters is another album from 2015 and I've only really listened to The River, but it's likely a good idea to skip the other songs. Then they came up with their first perfect album. Nonagon Infinity. This was their heaviest album before Infest The Rat's Nest and Murder of the Universe came out, and the special gimmick of this album was that it could be played infinitely. I've been wanting to have a vinyl record since I was about 15 or 16, and this album became my first vinyl record when I turned 18. I love this album and listening to it over and over again is an amazing experience.

We get to another era in this band's discography. They come up with a huge task. They decide to release 5 albums in one year. They've already been pumping quality releases year after year, and in 2017 the band decides to release these 5 albums, and they will do this again 5 years later. They explore microtonal music and how it would fit in with rock music. They come up with Flying Microtonal Banana, which is one of the first times microtones have been used in Western music. Microtones originate from the Middle East and the Ottoman region, and the band used this piece of music theory in their rock music. The other unique thing I've noticed in some of the tracks on this album is the de-sync of drums. I forgot to mention the band had two drummers, Michael Cavanagh and Eric Moore, until 2020 when Eric Moore dropped out of the band. Murder of the Universe picks up on the audiobook idea displayed before in Eyes Like The Sky, but this time it works as a musical album too. The album has three chapters. The first chapter is about a human stumbling upon a monster-human hybrid with murderous intent. The human that stumbles upon this beast has an interest in becoming powerful, and the beast starts to have mutual intentions too, and they merge and, as a result of absorbing another consciousness, it suffers and becomes more murderous. The altered beast then slowly decays. The second chapter is about the Lord of Lightning, where he invokes suffering on townspeople until he accidentally reanimates a corpse, which becomes a creature known as Balrog. The Lord of Lightning then has an epic battle with the Balrog. The Lord of Lightning wins and he stops bothering the townsfolk. The third chapter is about a person that creates a soy protein munt machine, which is a robot whose sole purposes are to vomit and die. The munt machine rejects the creator's love, so the creator decides to merge with his creation, becoming a cyborg. This album initiates the idea of the Gizzverse, the idea that the band is a concept band, linking albums together to create a story. This is purely a fan creation, and the story of the Gizzverse is up to the fans. Speaking of the Gizzverse, a fan made compilation known as Murder of the Nonagon Fuzz reveals a secret album where songs from different albums link up to each other.

King Gizzard is already halfway through the year, and they have 6 more months to release 3 albums. They collaborate with another band, Mild High Club, to create Sketches of Brunswick East, a jazz rock album. There is background noise throughout the album and it adds to the atmosphere. You will hear more of Han Tyumi throughout the discography, which is the Charles TTS voice. You can hear his voice in Tezeta, and the microtones come back in The Book. Their fourth album Polygondwanaland is completely free and has been released under an open source license. You can download the torrent on their website in the bootlegger section and it's 100% legal. This is the band's closest to progressive rock album, and it features the search for the fourth color, with tetrachromacy. On the vinyl record at the end, Han Tyumi says, "Hello". Their fifth album released this year is another miscellaneous album, but most of it is consistent, with the exception of two key songs. Most of the album is more poppy stuff, but Greenhouse Heat Death is a somewhat heavy microtonal song, and The Great Chain of Being is revealed to be their first heavy metal song. This album is Gumboot Soup, and it was released on December 31, 2017. When that album released, the band was announcing they were going to take a break for a year. I almost forgot to mention in 2017 they started writing another album, but it wouldn't be released until 2022.

Thee Oh Sees
Another modern rock band I love. I love their KEXP sessions especially. Listen to Protean Threat, Carrion Crawler / The Dream, and Floating Coffin if you listen to albums. Some of their better songs include Tidal Wave, Canopnr '74, Sentient Oona, Web, and I Come From The Mountain.

Ty Segall
Probably the most similar artist to Thee Oh Sees. Slaughterhouse and Manipulator are amazing. Tell Me What's Inside Your Heart, Feel, and I Sing Them are some songs I can think of when it comes to Ty Segall.

The Mars Volta
This band has great albums and tracks. I haven't listened to their ST, but they still kick ass. Frances the Mute, Bedlam in Goliath, and De-Loused in the Comatorium are my favorites of theirs. Goliath, Roulette Dares, and L'Via L'Viaquez are some of their greatest songs.

Ween
This artist might be one of the harder ones to get into out of the ones I've listed, but if you've watched SpongeBob, then you've likely listened to 2 of their songs without even knowing it. They wrote Loop de Loop and Ocean Man. If you want to get into this band, I'd recommend listening to Ocean Man and determining if you want to listen to Ween's weirder stuff (first 3 albums), which are their brownest albums, which is a term used by fans to describe the likeness of Ween on a scale, and if you want to listen to Ween's more mainstream stuff, like Chocolate and Cheese, Quebec, and White Pepper.

black midi
This is the most recent rock band listed here. They formed in 2018, and they released 2 singles, Crow's Perch and Talking Heads. They've also played a few of their songs in a KEXP session before they released their debut album, Schlagenheim. If you're more of an alt rock fan, Schlagenheim will suit your taste well. If you like more of the theatrical stuff, their recent albums Cavalcade (2021) and Hellfire (2022) will be your favorites.

System of a Down
Radiohead
I know what you might be thinking. Ew, a Radiohead fan is recommending me rock music? Go back to living a kissless life, virgin!

You might not be thinking that, but just in case if you were, it's totally okay. The fanbase mentions Radiohead like they're the best band out there. They do have great albums, but some of their stuff, like Kid A, can be compared to other artists, such as Aphex Twin or Squarepusher. Kid A is simply nothing more than an exploration into IDM, which was pretty much the landscape of electronic music in the '90s. Amnesia and 8 Outtakes from Amnesia is an extension of Kid A, and almost all of the tracks on those albums are just as good. I started on In Rainbows, and it remains my favorite Radiohead album.

Led Zeppelin

... and now for the albums!
Beck - Odelay
Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf
Gojira - From Mars to Sirius
Cage the Elephant - Melophobia

What stuff would you recommend? Doesn't have to be rock music, but it is preferred.

According to last.fm, one of the similar bands to Dead Meadow is Fuzz. I loved Fuzz, with my favorite album of theirs being II. Is Feathers a good album to start on?

I'll check em out! I haven't listened to Feathers yet, but I'd say they have consistent enough quality that most albums are a good start!

I don't know if this is really rock or western-style metal (i.e. beartooth) as they blur the line sometimes. But you guys should really listen to Bad Wolves.

I've got Comatose and Remember When on repeat every now and then.

Pretty good band, epic to know they have a percussionist rather than a drummer.

Amnesia and 8 Outtakes from Amnesia is an extension of Kid A, and almost all of the tracks on those albums are just as good. I started on In Rainbows, and it remains my favorite Radiohead album.
Seems kinda funny to talk about Radiohead's least rock album on the rock thread. I'd recommend The Bends far sooner than I would Kid A, and I think Pablo Honey is deeply underrated as well, especially when you take into consideration the B-sides from that era ("Banana Co", "Coke Babies", "Killer Cars", most of the My Iron Lung EP which is a bridge between Pablo Honey and The Bends eras).

Kid A isn't bad, but I think most of its acclaim comes from having been sprung on an audience who hadn't heard much in the way of IDM who then considered it some wild and bizarre sonic jump instead of Radiohead applying their icy neurotic sensibilities to an existing genre. I think the songs I'd rather listen to the most off it are the ones that are the least weird for the sake of it ("How to Disappear Completely", "Optimistic", etc). Also, it comes right in the middle of Radiohead's Important phase as opposed to being entertaining or fun to listen to, which their earlier stuff absolutely was ("The Bends" was a big piss take on their sudden popularity, "My Iron Lung" is a snarky "Creep" flip). Basically Radiohead without humor. Kinda meh.

In Rainbows does kick ass though, much agreed. Nice to hear them having a bit of fun again.

Beck - Odelay
Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf
Gojira - From Mars to Sirius
Cage the Elephant - Melophobia
Good choices. I was surprised at how well Odelay held up after not having heard it for a long time, given how stressful its recording was for Beck. I'm hoping people come around on Guero as well, since that album takes the Odelay sensibilities and darkens it a bit, and I think it's a different spin on the same idea and just as cool to listen to. I think I'd probably take either of the first two Cage records before Melophobia, but that's mostly my nostalgia talking (Cage was one of my favorite bands as a kid), it's not far behind.

Anyway, most of what I listen to is rock, yes! I recently picked up a big stack of 25 CDs when I was in Wales visiting my girlfriend, mostly 90s alt and weird rock bands. I've now got 210 CDs and CD boxsets in the collection. Completed my Breeders collection, completed my Bush collection, got some Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in there for your dreamily menacing indie rock fix, some R.E.M., some Built to Spill, Better Than Ezra, tons. Tons I still gotta listen to as well.

I've recently been a little obsessed with the first Remy Zero record--it's not brilliant as far as songwriting goes, since it's very sound-focused, but the sounds they conjure up are so eerie and haunting and ghostly, it's phenomenal on that front. It'll take you a few tries to start remembering stuff from it though.

Here's my Discogs collection if anyone wants to peek through what I've got.
